Madrid, July 7 (DPA) Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in Germany midfielder Sami Khedira, according to sports daily AS Wednesday.

Khedira, 23, has had an outstanding World Cup football as a defensive midfielder and was due to play for Germany in Wednesday’s semi-final against Spain.

According to AS, new Real coach Jose Mourinho has given his approval to the possible signing. VfB Stuttgart, Khedira’s club, may accept around 13 million euros because his contract with them finishes in 2011.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich Tuesday made it clear that they will not contemplate selling Bastian Schweinsteiger, another German World Cup star in whom Real were interested.

There have also been reports that Khedira is wanted by English champions Chelsea.

So far, Real’s only summer signings have been Angel Di Maria, 22, from Benfica and Sergio Canales from Racing Santander. On Tuesday Real announced that Canales, aged 19, will be in the first-team squad rather than being loaned back to Santander.

Last summer Real splashed out an astonishing 260 million euros on eight players, in a vain attempt to end Barcelona’s domestic domination.
