Johannesburg, July 12 (IANS) The overall attendance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was the third highest in history, behind the 1994 tournament in the US and the one in 2006 in Germany, FIFA said Monday.
A total of 3.18 million fans attended the 64 matches in South Africa, while the average attendance was 49,670, Xinhua reported citing a FIFA statement.
The 1994 World Cup in the US, where 3.59 million people watched the matches, still holds the record. In Germany, 3.36 million supporters attended the tournament four years ago.
The South African Press Association, however, added that the number given by FIFA excluded those viewing the matches at fan parks throughout the country.
