New Delhi, July 21 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) sanitary landfill sites, which are associated with heaps of garbage and foul smell, will now be surrounded with fragrant flowers and gardens, an official said Wednesday.
Yogender Chandolia, chairman of MCD’s standing committee, Wednesday said: ‘We are planning to plant two lakh saplings this year in areas where garbage is dumped.’
He said this while inaugurating the ‘Van-Mahotsav-2010’ at the Bhalswa sanitary landfill site in north Delhi.
The MCD’s drive is aimed at checking the foul stench near garbage dumps and to provide a green shield to the eyesores. It will focus on landfills which have either been filled to capacity or are nearing capacity utilization.
‘The soil excavated from sites for underground parking lots is being dumped over the garbage in sanitary landfill sites and trees are being planted. This landfill site will be developed into a beautiful garden,’ he added.
Municipal Commissioner K.S. Mehra said: ‘MCD is making every effort to improve the eyesores of the city where the garbage of the city is dumped by planting ornamental flowers after laying a layer of soil.’
