Hoshiarpur (Punjab), July 21 (IANS) The Punjab Police Wednesday said it had busted a gang that promised young men recruitment in the Indian Army.
Hoshiarpur district police chief Rakesh Aggarwal said eight men, including mastermind Ashwini Kumar who posed as a colonel, were held after the scam came to light.
They have been booked for cheating, forgery and conspiracy.
The arrests came after 32 young men and their families had been cheated of nearly Rs.40 lakh. The police recovered only Rs.13 lakh.
‘The youths paid between Rs.60,000 and Rs.1.5 lakh. Most of them belonged to poor families and were desperate for an army job,’ a police officer said.
