Panaji, July 27 (IANS) For the third time in a week, the opposition Tuesday disrupted assembly proceedings demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the police-politician-drug mafia nexus in Goa.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators stormed into the well of the house crying ‘shame, shame’ and shouting slogans denouncing the Congress-led coalition government after Chief Minister Digambar Kamat refused to hand over the nexus probe to the CBI.

‘The Crime Branch which has a zero conviction rate will not be able to handle the drug nexus investigation. The Crime Branch cannot even get a single conviction in a gambling case,’ Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar said at the fag end of Question Hour, before leading the opposition to the well of the House, forcing the speaker to adjourn proceedings.

Kamat, rejecting the opposition’s demand, said the Crime Branch was a credible organisation and was doing a ‘very good job’.

On July 20, the opposition disrupted assembly proceedings twice with a similar demand of a CBI enquiry into the drug nexus to which Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son has been linked by an Israeli newspaper.

‘We are forced to think that the chief minister is protecting people involved in the drug trade. Why is he scared of giving the nexus case to the CBI?’ Parrikar asked.

‘The chief minister is only assenting guilt by not handing over the probe to the CBI. Not accepting our demand for a CBI enquiry is an indirect indictment of the concerned person (involved in drug trade),’ Parrikar said.
