Chandigarh, July 30 (IANS) Punjab Friday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to increase vigil on the India-Pakistan border along the state in the wake of rising inflow of drugs and counterfeit currency from the other side, the state’s deputy chief minister said here.
‘We have observed an increase in the cases of illegal smuggling of drugs and counterfeit currency from across the border. This is being used as a tool to destabilise the economy of the whole country. Therefore, we have requested the prime minister to increase vigil on the border,’ Sukhbir Singh Badal said.
‘Punjab Police is doing its best to seize the drugs and currency. Seizures during the last two years (in Punjab) account for more than 60 percent of the total seizures in the country.
‘Keeping in view the gravity of the problem, the union government must use the latest technology to properly seal the porous points in the border,’ Badal said.
The Border Security Force (BSF) guards the 553 km-long fenced international border in Punjab.
During the past few months, at least 18 terrorists, who were allegedly trying to revive terrorism in the state, have been arrested from different parts of Punjab.
‘We are doing our best to maintain law and order in the state. We would not allow terrorism to raise its ugly head in the state at any cost,’ said Badal.
