Kolkata, July 30 (IANS) Former Medical Council of India (MCI) president Ketan Desai, arrested in April on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs.2 crore to grant recognition to a medical college in Punjab, was brought to Kolkata Friday for his alleged involvement in another case here.
A CBI spokesperson said that during investigation it was found that Desai had allegedly taken a bribe of Rs.20 crore from Kolkata-based private hospital – KPC Medical College, to sanction extension for its academic session.
The Anti-Corruption Department of CBI in Kolkata filed a case against Desai and appealed to its counterparts in Delhi demanding that Desai be brought to the city for interrogation for his alleged involvement in the KPC Medical College case.
Friday Desai was brought to Kolkata and produced before the CBI court in Bankshal and remanded in seven days police custody, said the CBI spokesperson.
A CBI officer on condition of anonymity said, ‘As CBI has no lock up in the city we contacted with the authorities of the Kolkata police and Desai was taken to the central lockup in Lalbazar – city police headquarters.’
‘During interrogation Desai complained that he was feeling uneasy and suffering from acute chest pain. He was rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and later sent back to custody after preliminary check up,’ said the CBI officer.
