New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday dismissed allegations by her Uttar Pradesh counterpart Mayawati that the city government had diverted funds meant for Dalit upliftment to the Commonwealth Games.
‘We have not diverted any funds from the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes welfare schemes for the Commonwealth Games,’ Dikshit told reporters here.
Mayawati had Monday alleged that the Delhi government had diverted Rs.750 crore meant for Dalit welfare to the Oct 3-14 Games.
‘The fund allocated by the government of India under the Special Component Plan, which is essentially meant for the welfare of Dalits, cannot be diverted to another head; therefore it is matter of great concern that a Congress government has violated the rules and diverted such a hefty amount to meet the luxury requirements of Commonwealth Games,’ Mayawati said in a statement Monday night.
There was chaos in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday over the issue and the upper house was adjourned as opposition party members protested the alleged diversion of funds.
