New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS) Kashmiri students and professionals living in Delhi Saturday took out a rally here to protest the human rights violations back home.
Hundreds of Kashmiris assembled at the Jantar Mantar and demanded a political solution to the Kashmir issue, rather than ‘a military one’.
Among the other demands put forth were the demilitarisation of Kashmir, the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers Act), the release of all political prisoners and a dialogue with Kashmiri leaders.
Shouting pro-freedom slogans, the protesters also demanded an immediate end of the killings of protesters in the Valley by security forces.
Though no major incident of violence was reported from anywhere in the Kashmir Valley Saturday and authorities lifted curfew from parts of Srinagar and three major towns, another injured protester succumbed to his injuries in hospital, taking the toll in the last nine days to 32 and the total since June 11 to 49. Most of the deaths were due to firing by security forces.
