Chennai, May 4 (Inditop) PMK founder S. Ramadoss Monday backed AIADMK chief Jayalalitha’s demand for a separate Tamil ‘eelam’ (homeland) in the Sri Lanka’s north.
“After the constitution of the new parliament, the AIADMK leader (Jayalalitha) will ensure the creation of a separate Tamil eelam just as Bangladesh was through the endeavours of late Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1971 despite opposition from 104 nations including our giant neighbour China,” Ramadoss told reporters.
“The DMK has done precious little for the Tamil ethnic minority in Sri Lanka except issuing empty rhetorical statements and sending silly telegrams,” Ramadoss added.
Despite faulting Jayalalitha’s Tamil eelam stand as an “impossible utopian dream”, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said the AIADMK would be welcomed into the National Democratic Alliance after the polls.
“The BJP is against interfering in the international affairs of a sovereign nation through military adventurism,” Naidu told reporters during a separate interaction.
“The BJP stands for the peaceful and honourable existence of the Lankan Tamils within the parameters of a united nation with rights equivalent to states in India and are worried about the ethnic minority that has suffered for too long.”
Muslim leader Jawahirullah blamed the DMK-Congress combine for ignoring the plight of suffering Lankan Tamils.
“Both the Congress and the DMK are telling the Tamils here that they are for protecting the ethnic minority in Sri Lanka but are indirectly collaborating with the Lankan military machine against the innocent civilians in the northern part of the island,” Jawahirullah told reporters.
Meanwhile, expatriate Tamil associations from Europe and US thanked Jayalalitha through correspondence and in person for her pro-Tamil eelam stand.
The Left, an ally of AIADMK, has distanced themselves from Jayalalitha’s stand and refrained from comment.
