New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said Tuesday that it was opposed to MPs taking a decision on their own salary hike and a system should be put in place, as in the case of government servants, for such decisions.

CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said the government had promised to look into the demand of setting up a mechanism way back in 2006 for deciding hike in salaries of MPs but had not taken any decision yet.

‘The CPI-M has opposed the concept that MPs should decide their salaries. The CPI-M volunteered and withdrew from the committee of MPs (which recommended hike in their salaries to the government). We will not be party to any such decision,’ Yechury said.

He said various proposals had been put forward for a systemic linkage and many countries in the world had mechanisms to decide on salaries for MPs.

Referring to the pay commission which decides salaries of government employees, Yechury said MPs were the foremost servants of the people. He suggested they should be linked to a similar system.

The Bharatiya Janata Party also said Tuesday that a system should be evolved to decide on hike in salaries of MPs.
