Lucknow, Aug 18 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Wednesday seemed unhappy with the style of functioning of the state bureaucracy and the police and urged officials to be responsive to the people.
Mayawati expressed her displeasure at her monthly review meeting of all senior administrative and police officials including divisional commissioners, district magistrates, deputy inspector generals of police and district police chiefs at the Tilak Hall in the state secretariat here.
‘I find that a lot of people have to rush to Lucknow with their routine problems from remote districts, towns and villages, which obviously means that officials at the district level were not carrying out their duties in the manner they were expected to be doing,’ Mayawati was stated to have told the officials.
Reminding the officials of her commitment to the people to make the state ‘crime-free, terror-free and development-oriented’, she said, ‘all that can be achieved only with a well meaning and responsive bureaucracy’.
While laying emphasis on maintenance of law and order, Mayawati said: ‘It must be remembered that law and order is the government’s top priority and there was no room for any compromises on that front.’
She felt the need for officials to be more sensitive to the problems of common people.
‘It has been found that unattended minor problems often aggravate into major crisis, which is why it is important that officials remain attentive and sensitive,’ she said.
The chief minister further warned that she would not tolerate any laxity on the part of officials in handling problems of common people.
