Siliguri, Aug 19 (IANS) With river Teesta in spate, several low-lying areas in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district were inundated Thursday, affecting 2,500 people as the administration hoisted the ‘red signal’ over both banks of the river.

District administration sources said more than 500 people were shifted to safer areas after the water level of Teesta rose following heavy rainfall in the hilly and plains areas.

The red warning has been issued from the Jalpaigauri town down the river to the Bangladesh border.

Low-lying areas in Jalpaiguri sub-division like Sarada Palli, Sukanto Palli, Vivekananda Nagar and Bala Para have been flooded and water has entered the tea garden areas of Randhamali and Raipur.

The water levels of other north Bengal rivers, Jaldhaka and Mahananda, has also gone up. The weatherman has predicted very heavy rains in the region till Friday afternoon.
