Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 1 (IANS) The State Election Commission Wednesday decided to conduct the local bodies elections in Kerala in the last week of October.

Elections have to be held to fill up close to 22,000 seats in the three-tier local body structure in the state.

‘Elections would be held in a single phase and in a manner in which the newly-elected bodies would assume office before Nov 1,’ an official said after the SEC meeting here.

Another feature of the election would be that women will get 50 percent seats to contest and as a result 605 local bodies of the total 1,208 will be headed by women.

These include 489 village councils, 76 block councils, seven district councils, 30 municipalities and three corporations in the state.
