New Delhi, Sep 1 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination Thursday for another term in office as party chief.
Party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said here that Gandhi will give her assent to the nomination papers Thursday.
According to the party constitution, the candidate for Congress president’s post need not go personally to file nomination, Dwivedi said. The candidate can be give written consent on the nomination supported by 10 Pradesh Congress Committees (PCC).
He said the scrutiny of nominations will take place Friday and if no other candidate has filed nominations, Gandhi will be declared elected as party president for another term.
Congress sources said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cabinet ministers, Congress general secretaries and other party leaders would file sets of nominations for Sonia Gandhi’s re-election.
They said that several sets of nominations will be filed for her election by PCC delegates from states. Four sets of nominationS will be filed from Uttar Pradesh.
Gandhi will sign the nomination papers at her residence Thursday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The last date for filing nominations for the post of Congress president is Sep 2, according to the election schedule declared by the party.
Gandhi is the longest serving party president in the 125-year history of the Congress. She assumed office as party president in 1998.
