Lucknow, Sep 9 (IANS) A gangster wanted in nearly 36 criminal cases was gunned down by security personnel in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district but his aide managed to escape, police said Thursday.

Kaushal Rathi, 28, who carried a reward of Rs.40,000 for his capture, was shot dead late Wednesday during a gunbattle with police near the Sheeshmahal area.

‘Acting on a tip-off, we tried to intercept Kaushal and his accomplice who were on a motorcycle. The duo started firing at us. We also responded and in the half-hour gunbattle, Kaushal was shot dead,’ police inspector Suresh Chauhan told reporters Thursday morning in Bijnor, some 350 km from Lucknow.

‘In the operation that was jointly carried out by police and sleuths of the Special Operations Group, two of our team members also received bullet injuries. Both are being treated at a hospital,’ he added.

According to police, Rathi was involved in nearly 36 criminal cases, including murder and abduction, in various parts of Uttar Pradesh.

‘Efforts are on to nab Kaushal’s aide, who managed to escape during the operation,’ said Chauhan.
