New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan has been conferred a doctorate degree in world music by the University of Wolverhampton in Britain.

The singer, known for popularising Punjabi folk music internationally, was conferred this honour Tuesday by the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure of the University for recognition of his lifelong career in music.

‘This is an emotional moment for me. I accept this honour on behalf of the millions of fans and listeners of my music across the world. I would like to thank everybody here today and especially the people of Wolverhampton, who have shown me so much love and respect over the years. I am both touched and thankful for this recognition and I will continue entertaining my audience like always,’ said Maan in a statement.

Maan has proudly joined the league of being known as a doctorate in music along with others like Sir Paul McCartney, Bill Cosby and Bob Dylan.
