Agartala, Sep 12 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha Sunday lashed out at the state governments in the northeast for failing to control the law and order situation.

‘The state governments of the region, mostly ruled by the Congress, miserably failed to control the law and order while there have been various scams siphoning off crores of public money,’ BJP Mahila Morcha president Smriti Irani, also a TV actress, told reporters after winding up her 10-day visit to the region.

Terming the women of the region are very vibrant and energetic, she regretted that they had not been able to come to the forefront in politics and administration.

If women in larger numbers took part in politics, the socio-ethnic-economic problems of the region would be resolved harmoniously, Irani said.

‘Without proper empowerment and political enlightenment of the women, how can we develop the region?’

She also lamented that both the Congress and the Left parties were giving verbal assurances but had actually doing nothing.

She said that the BJP Mahila Morcha would form an organisational base in each assembly segment across the country, especially in the eight northeastern states.

Irani said: ‘Education, employment and healthcare are the biggest among the numerous problems plaguing the region. People are forced to go outside the region due to the lack of these basics.’

During her 10-day visit to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura, Irani formed Mahila Morcha units in each state.

The BJP had recently constituted a northeast cell at its party headquarters in New Delhi to look after the grievances of the people from the region and also constituted ‘Nari Shakti Kendras’ (women’s authority centres) throughout the country to address the problems of women.
