Mumbai, Sep 22 (IANS) Companies must contribute to sustainable economic development to improve lives in ways that are good for business and for development, says Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan.
‘While a profit motive is essential for the growth of any enterprise, the growth of commerce must bear social relevance,’ said Sankaranarayanan at the 175th Foundation Day celebrations of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry here Tuesday.
‘It is my considered opinion that businesses must be committed to contribute to sustainable economic development by working with employees, their families, the local community and society at large. Chambers of Commerce should play a significant role in fostering socially responsible businesses.’
Congratulating the Chamber for its role in advancing trade and commerce in the country, he asked it to act as a pressure group to fast-track infrastructure projects in the city and the state.
‘Infrastructure in the state needs to keep pace with the demands of changing times. The state needs much more investment in infrastructure sectors such as power, roads, railways, ports and aviation through public-private partnerships than it is provisioning at present,’ he said.
Sankaranarayanan presented the Corporate Citizen Award instituted by the Chamber to Larsen & Toubro, Blue Dart, Birla Sunlife Financial Services and BDH Industries Ltd.
