New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ‘step in’ and reassure the international community that necessary steps were being taken to hold a successful Commonwealth Games (CWG).
Asking the central government to not ‘put the nation to shame’ by adopting a ‘casual and careless’ approach after the reported mess in organising the CWG, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said this was not the time to quarrel with the government as this was an issue of the country’s prestige.
‘PM should step in and reassure the international community that necessary steps are being taken to hold a successful Games,’ Naidu, a Rajya Sabha MP, told reporters here.
The former BJP president, who visited Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium after a foot overbridge near the venue collapsed Tuesday, said the government seemed unmoved by reports of the CWG mess.
Several foreign contingents have castigated the Games village as ‘filthy and unlivable’.
‘We are hoping that the government will take prompt and corrective action,’ Naidu said.
He said the international community was looking for a new level of assurance after two Taiwanese nationals were shot at near the Jama Masjid Sunday.
‘Such incidents send wrong signals. All of us are aware that the enemies of the nation want to create panic among the people,’ he said.
He said the BJP wanted successful Games. ‘We got the opportunity to hold the Games after a lot of effort during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government.’
‘Six years have passed… I don’t know what the government was doing,’ Naidu said.
Neither the Delhi government nor the central government could escape responsibility. ‘All of them are accountable,’ he added.
