Mumbai, Sep 29 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities Wednesday slipped below the 20,000 mark as profit booking picked up steam.
The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), opened at 20,086.89 points, was about 30 minutes before closing bell ruling at 19,955.05 points , down 149.81 points or 0.75 percent from its previous close at 20,104.86 points.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was off 33 points at 5,996.45.
Broader markets also moved down. The BSE midcap was trading 0.35 percent down and the BSE smallcap index was flat.
The market breadth was negative with 1,238 scrips advancing, compared to 1,719 stocks declining and 106 remaining unchanged.
Metals and FMCG scrips were under selling pressure.
