New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS) Former law secretary T.K. Viswanathan Friday assumed the Office of the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, officials said here.

Viswanathan, 62, who was adviser to Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily, succeeded P.D.T. Achary, who retired Sep 30 after serving as the secretary-general for six years.

Viswanathan was appointed by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar after consultations with Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj.

Achary rose through the ranks of the Lok Sabha staff and was given a year’s extension in 2009 despite then leader of opposition L.K. Advani expressing his reservations on the move.
