New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) Delhi virtually shut down Thursday ahead of the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony, with government offices, banks, major markets and educational institutions closed for the day.
An otherwise busy week day resembled a holiday with most streets giving a deserted look.
Security remained tight across the city, with thousands of police and paramilitary personnel on duty, guarding both the Games venues and areas around them.
Schools, colleges and hostels were declared closed for the 12-day Games that began Oct 3.
Road traffic was restricted on routes near Rajpath, Parliament Street, Janpath, Connaught Place and around the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where the gala closing ceremony will be held.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Giving him company will be Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ruling United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
Around 60,000 spectators are expected to attend the event.
