Chandigarh, Oct 24 (IANS) People of Chandigarh are at a higher risk of heart diseases compared to the rest of the country, an independent study by a cooking oil company has found.
Residents of Chandigarh are at a 59.1 percent risk of getting cardiovascular disease compared to the national average of 44.8 percent, said the study.
The study drew over 60,000 respondents.
It pointed out that urban India was more at risk to the disease owing to faulty lifestyle and lack of exercise.
Chandigarh, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, has a population of over one million people.
‘The lipid abnormalities are partly genetically determined and partly dependent on environmental factors, like diet and physical activity. Accordingly, the abnormalities appear relativity early in life much before the onset of actual disease,’ said Arvind Kaul, cardiologist at the Silver Oaks hospital in Mohali, about 10 km from here.
The study also said that in India, men in the age group 30-39 and women in age group 50-59 years were more prone to heart disease.
