Srinagar, Nov 12 (IANS) A separatist guerrilla and a police constable were killed in a gunfight between the militants holed up in a house and security forces in north Kashmir Sopore town Friday, police said.

Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police surrounded a house in Krankshivan Naseem Bagh area of Sopore early Friday following information about guerrillas hiding inside, a senior police officer said here.

It was later found that there was only one militant holed up in the house in Sopore, nearly 55 km from here.

The militant opened fire when he was asked to surrender, triggering a gunfight that lasted several hours, the police officer said.

‘A constable of the SOG, who had entered the house at 5 a.m. to carry out a surprise assault, was killed,’ the officer said, adding that the bodies of the militant and the constable have been recovered.

The guerrilla was a local, he added.
