Lucknow, Dec 22 (IANS) Seven members of a family, including five minors, drowned after the car they were travelling in spun out of control and fell in a canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district Wednesday, police said.

The accident took place late Wednesday evening in Jani area, where the Scorpio SUV carrying 10 people fell in the Ganga canal.

‘Of the 10 people sitting inside, seven drowned. We managed to rescue the remaining three members of the family,’ Superintendent of Police (rural) Anant Deo told IANS on phone from Meerut, some 450 km from Lucknow.

‘Those killed include five children aged between 7 and 13 years, a man and a woman,’ he added.

The family was travelling from Muzaffarnagar to attend a function, he added.
