Kolkata, Jan 9 (IANS) Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Sunday said that the target of spending 2 percent of the GDP on healthcare would soon be achieved.

‘In 2001, the target was to increase the spending from 0.9 percent to at least 2 percent of the GDP on healthcare. If there was no financial meltdown in 2008-09, perhaps we might have achieved this target,’ said Mukherjee while inaugurating the new super specialty Fortis hospital here.

Mukherjee also added that currently 1.5 percent of the GDP was being spent on healthcare and hoped that the target of spending 2 percent of the GDP would be achieved sooner than later.
