London, Jan 29 (IANS) Britons have been advised to stay away from many Egyptian cities and those already in the country have been warned not to leave their hotels following unrest in Egypt.
The Foreign Office has upgraded its advice to warn against ‘all but essential’ travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez.
‘The safety of British Nationals is absolutely paramount,’ The Telegraph quoted British Foreign Secretary William Hague as saying Saturday.
‘In light of the ongoing demonstrations in Egypt we have carefully reviewed our advice and now advise against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez.
‘This does not affect transits through Cairo airport for onward travel to other destinations, and it does not cover Egypt’s Red Sea resorts.’
The protests began Tuesday, a mixture of opposition to Mubarak’s nearly 30 years of rule and his use of Emergency Laws to stifle opposition. But it has grown into broader protests about the economy and food prices.
