Washington, Feb 2 (DPA) The US condemned the outbreak of violence on the streets of Cairo Wednesday following Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s announcement that he will step aside.
‘The United States deplores and condemns the violence that is taking place in Egypt, and we are deeply concerned about attacks on the media and peaceful demonstrators,’ White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. ‘We repeat our strong call for restraint.’
Clashes between Mubarak supporters and the longtime ruler’s opponents erupted on Cairo’s Tahrir Square, which had been at the centre of mass protests against Mubarak’s 30-year rule for the last nine days.
The protests forced Mubarak to announce Tuesday night he will not seek another term in office when the current one expires in September.
