Srinagar, Feb 14 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar and other parts of the Valley witnessed heavy snowfall early Monday. The weatherman forecast moderate to heavy rain and snowfall during the next 24 hours.
‘The minimum temperature in Srinagar was 0.1 degree Celsius today (Monday) while it was minus 4 degrees in north Kashmir Gulmarg ski resort, 0.2 degree in Pahalgam, minus 9 in Leh town and 12 degrees in winter capital Jammu,’ a weather department official said.
Heavy snowfall started in Srinagar city and other parts of the Valley in the morning with inches of snow accumulating on the city roads, which made it difficult for motorists to negotiate the slippery roads.
‘I started for office at 8.a.m. today and it took me four hours to cover a distance of 20 km,’ a government employee Abdul Rashid, 44, said here.
‘Heavy to moderate snowfall and rain are likely to occur at many places in the Valley during the next 24 hours (until Tuesday).
‘A western disturbance, active over Jammu and Kashmir presently, is expected to weaken after Feb 16 and till then wet weather would continue here,’ the official said.
Reports of heavy snowfall since the morning have also come in from Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Kargil, Drass, Banihal and other places in the Valley.
