Chennai, Feb 19 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Saturday said here that the three information technology special economic zones (IT-SEZs) set up in the state would attract an investment of Rs.3,400 crore (around $750 million) and create 90,000 jobs in the next five years.

Inaugurating two IT-SEZs in Madurai district and one in Tirunelveli district through video-conferencing from here, Karunanidhi said: ‘The state government decided to set up IT parks and SEZs in second-tier cities like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thiruchirapalli, Hosur, Salem and Coimbatore through ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd) and took steps towards that.’

He said ELCOT has invested Rs.32 crore at Illandaikulam and Rs.15 crore at Vadapalanji IT-SEZs in Madurai district, and together they were expected to attract an investment of Rs.1,400 crore and create employment for 50,000 people.

Karunanidhi said the IT-SEZ at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district with an outlay of Rs.50 crore was expected to attract investments to the tune of Rs.2,000 crore and create employment for 40,000 people.

He also inaugurated a data centre near here. The centre involved an investment of around Rs.60 crore.
