Meerut, Feb 19 (IANS) A woman was allegedly burnt to death Saturday by a group of villagers in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district for not allowing them to use her land for constructing a drain, police said.
Geeta Devi, 24, was set afire in Kharkara village after she entered into an argument with some villagers over construction of the drain on her land.
‘With multiple burns Geeta was admitted to a hospital, but died this evening during treatment,’ police inspector Umesh Kumar told reporters in Meerut, some 450 km from Lucknow.
‘In her dying declaration, the victim stated that the village head and two others would be responsible for her death and that they set her on fire for resisting their construction of drain on her land,’ he added.
Police are yet to arrest anyone.
