Beijing, Feb 26 (IANS) A total of 2,433 people were killed in coalmine accidents in China last year, 7.5 percent less than the previous year, a media report said Saturday.
A total of 79,552 were killed in other accidents, 37.4 percent less compared to the figure in 2005, People’s Daily quoted Huang Yi, spokesman for the state administration of work safety, as saying at a press conference Friday.
He said the cabinet had issued a notice last year in which it announced to directly supervise the handling of major accidents, and as a result, the efficiency of major accident settlements has increased by 17 percent, he said.
Forty-one out of 74 major accidents in China last year have been settled till date. He noted that one of the administration’s important tasks this year would be to take precautions to prevent major accidents.
