WINTON, California (Inditop) — At least two people have died and others have been injured after a gunman opened fire in Winton, California on Wednesday evening, officials said.
“All we know right now is that sometime after 9.30 [p.m.] in the 7,000-block of Peridot, some kind of altercation or disturbance took place,” a spokesman for the Merced County Sheriff’s Department told BNO News. At least five, and up to 7 people were shot after a person took out a handgun and fired several rounds, one of the victims was pronounced dead on scene while a second died at a local hospital.
The injured have been taken to several area hospitals and their conditions were not immediately available. “Detectives have just arrived on scene and began their investigation,” the spokesman said. The shooting took place in front of a residence when a gunman pulled out a gun and opened fire on a group of people. There was no information on the victims immediately available, except that one of them was a female.
“One person that was victimized was an innocent female who was walking up the street to get her daughter,” Mark Pazin, Merced County Sheriff told ABC30. She was not affiliated with the group, he said.
The spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said there were no arrests as of midnight and a description of the suspect was not yet known.
