New Delhi, June 19 (Inditop.com) The government Friday extended the ban on stockpiling of sugar till Jan 8 next year to keep rising sugar prices in check and deter black marketing activities.
The cabinet at a meeting here also decided to extend the decision to remove wheat from the list of commodities on which stock holding limits have been imposed.
“This is expected to help in the efforts being taken to tackle the problem of rising prices of sugar and also improve the availability of sugar. This would facilitate action by the central and state governments to undertake de-hoarding operations and to control prices of sugar,” said a government statement.
State governments were authorised to fix higher limits if they so desired, it said.
Sugar prices have jumped almost 27 percent since January following lower production.
