Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), June 8 (IANS) Two poachers were arrested here Wednesday with around 200 tortoises that were being smuggled to West Bengal, police said.

Vishwajeet and Faqir – both in their early 40s – were nabbed near from the Bareilly railway station following a joint operation by forest department officials and the police.

‘The two were to hand over the tortoises to their clients in West Bengal,’ Police Inspector Raja Singh told reporters in Bareilly, some 250 km from Lucknow.

Trade of tortoises is banned in India under the 1972 Wildlife Protection Act.
