Dhaka, June 24 (Inditop.com) Bangladesh is to enact a law that would provide more security personnel to protect Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other family members of the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The government has said it would actually be re-enacting a 2001 law that was later scrapped by the government of Hasina’s rival, Begum Khaleda Zia.
Besides Hasina, her Britain-based sister Sheikh Rehana and other family members would receive security, The Daily Star said quoting official sources.
The title of the proposed law is “Father of the Nation’s Family Members’ Security Act, 2009”. The home ministry is preparing the draft and it will be placed before the cabinet soon for approval.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was then president, was assassinated along with a score of family members in a military coup in 1975.
“Since there have been militants’ threats on the lives of Bangabandhu’s (Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) family members, we will soon enact a law to ensure their security,” said Home Minister Sahara Khatun.
Hasina is suffered impairment of her vision and hearing caused by a grenade attack on her rally August 21, 2004, in which 24 political associates were killed.
