Islamabad, Sep 1 (IANS) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that it would be appropriate for the provinces to hold elections to local bodies on the basis of computerised electoral rolls.
The prime minister said in Multan Wednesday that the computerised electoral rolls would be completed by April 2012 while the next general elections are scheduled to be held in 2013.
He said it would be the appropriate time for the provinces to hold local bodies elections after computerised electoral rolls have been finalised, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.
Computerisation of electoral rolls is being done as part of reforms being undertaken by Pakistan’s Election Commission to ensure fair, transparent and credible polls in the country.
The election panel’s Strategic Plan 2010-14, prepared in consultation with stake-holders, including all political parties, civil society and media, envisages door-to-door verification throughout Pakistan to prepare the computerised electoral rolls.
