Islamabad, Sep 1 (IANS) About 80 percent of Mohmand agency in Pakistan’s northwest has been cleared of militants, a senior army officer has claimed.

The army said the operation being conducted in the region would be completed in a few days, reported Dawn Thursday.

Corps Commander Peshawar Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik said they had reclaimed 80 to 85 percent area of the Mohmand Agency.

Mohmand Agency is located in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

General Malik said the army was clearing the area of land mines so that displaced residents of the area can return.

As many as 72 soldiers, including three officers, died during the operation, he said.

The Pakistan Army has launched a major offensive against militants in the mountainous tribal region.
