Jammu, Jan 3 (IANS) A day after a youth was killed in firing allegedly by paramilitary forces outside a National Hydro-Electric Projects Corporation project, the Jammu and Kashmir government began a review of the terms and conditions governing the power projects constructed and run by it in the state.
A cabinet sub-committee Tuesday reflected on the purchase of two major projects, Uri and Salal, from the NHPC, for which it needs Rs.2,000 crore, according to official sources.
The meeting of the cabinet sub-committee, headed by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, come at a time when a campaign is underway in the Kashmir Valley against the NHPC, accusing it of usurping the state’s water resources.
Under the agreement signed by the NHPC and the state government for various hydro-electric projects, most of them on the river Chenab that flows from the mountainous parts to the plains of Jammu before entering Pakistan, the state gets 12 percent free power as royalty.
The sub-committee would be submitting its report to the government in the next few days, an official spokesman said in a release issued here Tuesday.
