Akola (Maharashtra), Jan 3 (IANS) Shortly after elections were announced to various municipal corporations and Zila Parishads in Maharashtra Tuesday, a civic body asked the state government for funds to enable them conduct the polls.
The financially broke Akola Municipal Corporation, 600 km east of Mumbai, demanded Rs. 2 crore urgent help from the state government as it did not have any funds to conduct the elections, scheduled Feb 16.
‘The state of affairs of the Akola Municipal Corporation is pathetic. There is an absolute lack of money and resources and hence, I have sought funds from the state government to conduct the election,’ AMC’s deputy head Vishakha Motghare told IANS.
Motghare, however, refused to give more details on the issue, saying she will do so in a day or two.
Agreeing with Motghare, sources in the AMC said that the corporation has accumulated huge debts in tune of several hundred crores and is making no progress on the development of the town.
Sources also said that the Congress-NCP government has been ignoring it since many years now.
Elections to 10 major municipal corporations, including Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will be held Feb 16, while the elections to 27 Zilla Parishads across the state will take place Feb 7.
