New Delhi, July 7 (Inditop.com) Security for Varun Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Pilibhit who is reportedly facing threat to life, will not be upgraded to the top category of Z plus though his current cover will continue, said a top home ministry official Tuesday.
“We have conducted our appraisal and we feel there is no necessity to upgrade him to the Z plus category. He will stay with Y category,” the senior functionary in charge of VIP security told IANS.
While Y category has a security cover of 11 personnel, those in the Z plus category have over 30 personnel tailing them and providing proximate security cover.
Varun Gandhi has alleged that members of underworld mobster Chhota Shakeel’s gang were plotting to kill him while his mother and BJP leader Maneka Gandhi complained to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the home ministry was treating the threats to his life casually.
Seven of Shakeel’s henchmen, arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police last week, have allegedly confessed they had been sent to eliminate a few VIPs.
However, Special Cell officials said the seven arrested men had not specified if Varun Gandhi was on their hitlist.
In a statement released over the weekend, Varun Gandhi said: “The plot against my life by dangerous underworld criminals apprehended by Delhi Police exemplifies exactly the kind of terror and violence against which I stand and have been warning against.”
The young MP created a major controversy in the recently concluded general elections with his reported hate speeches against Muslims and was even arrested for it.
