Islamabad, Jan 31 (IANS) A total of 1,430 people, including 256 policemen and 227 soldiers, were killed in terrorist attacks last year in Pakistan’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a government report said.

Over 900 people were also injured in the 2011 attacks, Xinhua quoted provincial information minister Mian Iftikhar as saying.

Police arrested a total of 6,236 terrorists and 24,122 proclaimed offenders in 2011.

Two jails in the province were handed over to the Pakistan Army to convert them into detention centres for under-trial terrorists.

As many as 34 bomb blasts took place in the province in 2011. Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda and Kohat remained the most volatile areas.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its neighbouring Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) along the border with Afghanistan have suffered the highest number of casualties since the US-led war on terror was launched in 2001.
