Kolkata, March 1 (IANS) Five Maoists believed to be from Andhra Pradesh were arrested from various parts of Kolkata in a day-long operation, police said Thursday.
Greyhounds, an elite commando force of Andhra Pradesh, assisted by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police, nabbed the five rebels from different parts of the city during a clandestine operation that started Wednesday morning and continued till the early hours of Thursday.
The operation had turned dramatic Wednesday morning after one of the suspects was lifted off forcibly by the cops in a car in broad daylight from College Street, one of the busiest parts of the city, prompting bystanders to call it an abduction. Even the media went into a frenzy over what it called a “daring kidnapping”.
But police say the five are Maoists. Blueprints for making arms and money were recovered from them, police say.
Police believe the arrests will yield valuable information regarding Maoist activity within the city and its adjacent areas.
The five are expected to be produced before a city court Thursday.
