Kolkata, May 31 (IANS) Stepping up pressure on the Congress-led central government, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Thursday demanded a rollback of the recent hike in petrol prices but maintained that she did not support shutdowns.

“We don’t support the petrol price hike. We were the first political party to hit the roads to protest the price hike. Show me a single chief minister except me who has hit the road protesting the hike. If needed, we will do it again because we demand a rollback,” said Banerjee.
“But by calling a strike and shutdown, and that too by using violent means, you can’t solve a problem. I don’t support strikes and shutdowns because they destroy work culture,” she added.
Protesters set fire buses, put up road blockades and disrupted train movement in West Bengal during the 12-hour nationwide shutdown called against the petrol price hike Thursday.
