Kuala Lumpur, July 18 (Inditop.com) Michael Owen scored the winning goal on his debut as Manchester United made a impressive start in their pre-season tour, beating Malaysian XI 3-2 here Saturday.
Wearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s No.7 jersey, Owen came on as a substitute in the 60th minute and struck the winning goal with just five minutes left at the packed Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Owen looked impressive during his short cameo and miscued a shot after linking up well with Dimitar Berbatov. He finally opened his account for United when the ball spilled out just inside the area and the England striker took one touch before steering a shot between a defender and inside the post.
United had taken the lead in the eighth minute through Wayne Rooney, with Nani making it 2-0 before the break. Amri Yahyah pulled one back with a 20-yard volley and a howler from goalkeeper Ben Foster, who replaced Edwin van der Sar at the half-time, allowed Malaysia XI to level 2-2.
Foster misjudged a back-pass from Darron Gibson to allow Yahyah to score his brace in the 52nd minute.
United will take on Malaysia XI in a rematch next Monday after their planned game in Indonesia was cancelled following the terrorist bombings in Jakarta. The team will fly to Seoul Tuesday to continue their tour.
