Dortmund, Aug 25 (IANS) The 50th Bundesliga kicked-off as defending champion Borussia Dortmund defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 owing to the winner by substitute Mario Goetze, at the Signal Iduna Park here.
Werder Bremen’s inability to find rhythm and fight back after the late decider by Goetze, lost them the match Friday, reports Xinhua.
Dortmund opened the scoring in the 11th minute as they capitalised on a poor Bremen defence.
Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus utilised a pass by Jakub Blaszczykowski to beat Bremen goalie Sebastian Mielitz into the far corner.
Dutch international Eljero Elia rattled the right post with a hammering shot from 20 metres to give Bremen their first chance.
In the 75th minute, Bremen exploited Dortmund’s sloppy defence. Marko Arnautovic chipped the ball into the penalty area to new arrival Gebre Selassie who nodded home the equaliser.
However, the joy was short-lived as Dortmund youngster Goetze, who came off the bench three minutes earlier, slotted home the winner in the 81st minute to seal the victory.
“It was a though job today against Bremen, but I think we deserved the win at the end,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.
