Kolkata, July 25 (Inditop.com) West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi Saturday suggested that Eden Gardens floodlights should not be kept switched on during days when there were no matches, leaving Cricket Association of Bengal president Jagmohan Dalmiya and other CAB bigwigs a trifle embarassed.

Speaking as the chief guest at the CAB annual awards ceremony here, Gandhi also suggested the CAB use a portion of its wealth to restore Kolkata’s parks and water bodies.

With the state facing a power shortage that often leads to load shedding, he said one needed to keep in mind the irregular power supply in the city.

“Eden’s floodlights are a wonderful sight. But there are days when there’s no action but they are switched on. We should all keep that in mind. I am saying this as a neighbour of the great stadium that is today the stuff of legend,” said Gandhi.

Refering to the huge sponsorship amounts drawn by the Indian Premier League (IPL) and its teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders, the governor said: “My suggestion to them and to CAB would be to allocate money in the future for Kolkata’s heritage bodies, and water bodies and parks restoration projects.

“They should work alongside the West Bengal Heritage Centre, and also identify, say, 600 parks and water bodies, and contribute towards their restoration,” he said.

Former Bengal batsman Shyam Sundar Mitra was given the lifetime achievement award during the function.
