Mexico City, Aug 11 (EFE) Mexican authorities have arrested a drug kingpin for allegedly plotting to kill President Felipe Calderon, officials said Monday.
Dimas Diaz Ramos was arrested Sunday along with four other suspects in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state.
The arrest comes as the leaders of the region gathered in the western Mexican city of Guadalajara for the North American Leaders’ Summit Aug 9-10.
US President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also attended the summit.
Officials did not provide further details about the plan to kill Calderon.
“Based on the intelligence reports of the federal government, it was learned the Pacific cartel planned to kill President Felipe Calderon. Dimas Diaz Ramos was given the task of handling the details of the attack,” head of the police’s anti-drug unit, Ramon Eduardo Pequeno, said.
The Sinaloa drug cartel, also called Pacific cartel, is led by Joaquin Guzman alias “El Chapo”.
