Srinagar, March 11 (IANS) Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday shifted around 60 people from disaster prone Waltangoo Naad area of Kulgam district to safer locations following heavy snowfall in the area.
A total of 48 members of 10 families from Waltangoo Naad and Vasik Nag areas were shifted to safer locations, a police official said.
In another rescue operation, police in Shopian district along with the army rescued 10 members of two families from Mastpora village after their houses were cut off from the main village.
“Two families of Iqbal and Qasim Gujjar of Mastpora Keller, consisting of five members each, were rescued by police,” the official said.
The families were shifted to the houses of village heads of Moshwara and Mastpora.
The family of Yousuf Ganie from Dublipora Wachi was also rescued.
Heavy snowfall since Monday has cut off many far-flung areas. There has almost been a breakdown of electricity in the Kashmir Valley.
People are also facing drinking water scarcity in areas without electricity.
